Independent living for the Elderly

Independent living is simply any housing arrangement designed exclusively for older adults in their own homes. It doesn’t mean someone is living alone but rather they live alone and their spouse is often the primary caregiver.

An example of an independent living program would be a house with a basement suite for elderly tenants.

It’s hard to find reliable data on how many seniors in BC are living independently, since the government has no requirement to do so, and many also consider services as a respite care in Bridgewater, NJ for care giving. However, it does exist, and the numbers do not show a sudden shift from people in private to public assisted living homes (go to this site to learn more). The province’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. Perry Kendall, published a study last year that found only about 10 per cent of seniors are in a senior living center and that this percentage was increasing at a slightly faster rate than the overall population. This is because the seniors’ population grew faster than the overall population over the decade studied. There are lots of senior living community options that aged people can go to (check out this assisted living community to find options). In 2013, the seniors’ population, comprising people aged 65 and over, represented about 15 per cent of the population. By comparison, the general population (people aged 15 and older) represented just over 25 per cent.

In terms of education levels, people in seniors’ groups have higher rates of post-secondary education than the general population, although the differences are not large. For example, in 2013, 23 per cent of people in the seniors’ population had a post-secondary diploma compared with 24 per cent of the overall population.

Younger age groups were also more likely to be working in 2012 than in any previous decade studied.

In 2012, 31 per cent of people aged 18-29 were working, compared with 35 per cent of those aged 50-64, 39 per cent of those aged 65-69, and 41 per cent of those aged 70 and older. In contrast, the unemployment rate for those in their 20s was 18 per cent, 15 per cent for those aged 30-34, and 13 per cent for those aged 65 and older. Women in Canada generally work fewer hours per week than men and have a lower average weekly earnings. Canada has a relatively high level of hours worked for women: on average, women in Canada work 2.3 hours per day compared to 2.1 hours for men. According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information, women work an average of 49 hours per week at their full-time jobs, while men work 49 hours. In addition, while women and men alike typically worked more than 60 hours per week in 2009, women worked about a third fewer hours per week than men.

The study comes shortly after the federal government’s chief human resources officer issued a statement calling on Canadian companies to do more to promote equality in the workplace.
